Laura Lowden, mother of Tom Tully (Grandpa, Uncle Tom)
Thomas J. Tully Jr. (Deda)
Elizabeth Lowden, Mother of Dick, Liza and Dot
We know very little about the origins of Thomas James Tully Jr. (1871-1943) other than he was born in New Orleans to Thomas J. Tully and Kate Clarke, who were married in 1870 in New Orleans. So researchers go to it.
Thomas J. Tully Jr., known in the family as Deda, was married to sisters, Laura Lowden and Elizabeth Lowden, but not to worry-- not at the same time!
Deda married Laura (1875-1896) in 1894 and together they had Thomas James Tully III (Tom/Grandpa/Uncle Tom, 1895-1975). Laura died at age 22 after “she contracted the germs of the fatal disease that in a short time claimed her for its victim. She was taken to San Antonio in the vain hope that the mildness of the climate would aid in her recovery."
In 1910, Deda married Laura’s younger sister, Elizabeth Lowden (1884-1915) and together they had Dick (1911-2001) , Liza (1913-1992) and Dot (1915-1990).
We know much more about the Lowden family, only a small portion of which is outlined here.
Backing up to the early 1800s, John Hancock Beale married Almira E. Alexander and had a daughter, Laura Beale (1831-1915).
Laura married Alfred Donnaud (1822-1862) and had four children, one of whom was Eugenie (1847-1920).
Eugenie married Richard John Lowden (abt 1853-1904, born in Novia Scotia). The Lowdens were a prominent New Orleans family. Per his obituary, Richard was a steamship captain, “actor, sailor, journalist, filibuster, adventurer, man of commerce and Government office.”
